SYMPTOMS

When you run a Web query in Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following error message

Unable to open Web address. The connection to this Internet site took longer than the allotted time.

where Web address is the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that you want to query.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You are running Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or 4.01.


-and-

  • You perform a Web query that takes longer than five minutes to run.

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01, Service Pack 1.


MORE INFORMATION

Excel uses the same Internet settings for Web queries as Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer 4.0, 4.01, and Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 have a default timeout setting of five minutes. Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 lets you change the default timeout setting by modifying the Windows registry.
