SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to format a cell in Excel, the following error message may appear:

Your entry cannot be used. An integer or decimal number may be required.

When you attempt to change any settings on the General tab of the Options dialog box, the following message may appear:

Font Size must be within 1 and 409 points.

After you receive either of these error messages, Excel may redisplay the error message 4 to 5 times when you click OK.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You are running the Microsoft Active Accessibility Magnifier.


-and-

  • You attempt to do one of the following:


    • Format a cell on a worksheet.


-or-

    • Change any settings on the General tab of the Options dialog box.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, close Magnifier. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Close any error message that is currently displayed on the screen. You may need to click OK 4 to 5 times.
  2. On the Taskbar, click the Magnifier program.
  3. In the Magnifier dialog box, click Exit.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
