SYMPTOMS

When you run one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message:

MSMONEY caused an Invalid Page Fault in module <unknown>.

CAUSE

The behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:

  • Another program that is running on the computer interferes with Microsoft Money.
  • The TEMP or TMP environment variable points to an invalid folder, or a .tmp file in the Temp folder interferes with Money.
  • One or more Money program files may be missing or damaged.
  • Your Money data file may be damaged.


RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Clean Boot the Computer

Certain programs or terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) utilities can interfere with Microsoft Money. In addition, unnecessary programs that are running on your computer can take up system resources that Money needs to use. To determine if this is the case, clean boot the computer before you start Money. To do this, please see the instructions in the "More Information" section later in this article.

After you clean boot the computer, start Money to test if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Verify that the Temp Folder is Valid, and then Empty the Temp Folder

To do this:

  1. Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:

    cd \
    set

  3. Note the paths on the TEMP= and TMP= lines.

    NOTE: The values should match.
  4. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER

    cd temp

    where temp is the path you noted on the TEMP= and TMP= lines in step three.

    If you receive an "Invalid directory" error message, create a new Temp folder. To do this, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line

    md temp
    cd temp

    where temp is the path you noted on the TEMP= and TMP= lines in step three.
  5. At the command prompt, type del *.tmp, and then press ENTER.
  6. Shut down the computer, wait five seconds, and then start your computer normally.

Start Money to test if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Remove and Reinstall Money

  1. Insert the Money CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the program from starting automatically.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click your version of Microsoft Money, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. Click Remove All, and then follow the instructions on the screen to remove Money.
  6. Clean boot the computer. For information about how to do this, please see the instructions in the "More Information" section later in this article.
  7. Click Start, and then click Run.
  8. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK

    cd-rom:\setup.exe

    where cd-rom is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall Money.

Start Money to test if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Create and Test a New Money Data File

To check to see if the error occurs in a new file:

  1. On the File menu in Microsoft Money, click New or point to New, and then click New File.
  2. In the File name box, type MsTest, and then click OK.
  3. Create accounts and configure online banking services in the new file, and then test if the issue is resolved.
