SYMPTOMS
When you open a template file (.xlt) in Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Windows 95/98
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
After you click OK, Microsoft Excel quits.
Microsoft Windows NT
After you click OK, Microsoft Excel quits.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
- You attempt to open an Excel template file (.xlt).
-and-
- You have PC DOCS Open version 3.5x, 3.7, or 3.7.1 installed on your computer.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, obtain an updated version of DOCS Open from PC DOCS or remove the DOCS Open add-in from your Xlstart folder.
Obtaining an Updated Version of DOCS Open
To obtain an updated version of the DOCS Open program, contact PC DOCS as follows:

Removing the DOCS Open Add-in
To remove the DOCS Open add-in from your XLSTART folder, follow these steps:
- Start Windows Explorer and open the following folder:
Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Xlstart
- Right-click the Docsxl80.xla add-in, and click Cut on the shortcut menu.
- Select the following folder in Windows Explorer:
Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
The Docsxl80.xla add-in moves from the Xlstart folder to the Office folder. You can now open template files in Excel.
STATUS
According to PC DOCS, you can resolve this issue by upgrading to version 3.7.2 of the DOCS Open program. Contact PC DOCS for more information regarding this upgrade.
