SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:

Error in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ShellExt\target.dll.
Missing entry:CDPlayNotify

CAUSE

This error message can occur if you are using the CD AutoPlay Extender tool included with Microsoft Windows 95 PowerToys.

RESOLUTION

To work around this error message, remove the CD AutoPlay Extender tool from your computer. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click AutoPlay Extender, click Add/Remove, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

NOTE: You may be able to work around this issue by removing the PowerToys icon from the Startup folder.

MORE INFORMATION

The CD AutoPlay Extender tool included with Windows 95 PowerToys is not intended for use with Windows 98.

Windows 95 PowerToys is a suite of tools available for free download from the Microsoft Web site. Microsoft Technical Support Desktop Systems does not support the installation or usage of PowerToys or any of the components.
