SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install a program, you may receive the following error message:

ISINST30 caused a general protection fault in module _INS0433._MP at memory address

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are running the Mswheel.exe program.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, disable the Mswheel.exe program:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
  2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.
  3. On the Startup tab, click to clear the Mswheel.exe check box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Exit.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Install the program that generated the error message listed above.
  8. After you successfully install the program, repeat steps 1-6. In step 3, click to select the Mswheel.exe check box.

Windows 98 includes drivers that support wheel functionality for both Microsoft IntelliPoint and Logitech wheel mice, and the mouse software is not required for wheel functionality. Note that some features may require that the software be installed.

If you do not need the Mswheel.exe functionality, you can permanently disable it by removing the Mswheel.exe value from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
