SUMMARY

This article steps through the process of setting up a Windows for Workgroups 3.11 computer to be a client to a Small Business Server. There is no automated way of doing this procedure. Windows for Workgroups 3.11 computers have to be set up manually.

Install TCP/IP on a Windows for Workgroups Computer

Small Business Server is installed with only the TCP/IP protocol configured. You need to install TCP/IP on a Windows for Workgroups computer before it can have access to network resources.

To install TCP/IP:

  1. Copy the Windows for Workgroups TCP/IP files on to a floppy disk.


The Windows for Workgroups TCP/IP files are included on the Small Business Server CD. The files are located in the Clients\Tcp32wfw\Disks\Disk1 folder.

  1. Insert the disk into the client computer's drive A.
  2. Open the Network group and double-click Network Setup.
  3. Click Drivers.
  4. Click Add Protocol.
  5. Select Unlisted or Updated Protocol from the list and click OK.
  6. When you are prompted for a disk, type a:\ and click OK.
  7. Click Close.
  8. Click OK. The Microsoft TCP/IP Configuration dialog opens.
  9. Check to select the check box next to Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration.
  10. Click Yes to verify you want to use DHCP.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click Restart Computer when prompted.

Configuring Network Settings

Before you can connect to the Small Business Server, you will need to modify some of the client computer's network settings.

To modify network settings:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Network.
  3. The Workgroup field should be set to your Windows NT domain name. This allows the Windows for Workgroups computer to easily view server resources.
  4. Click Startup.
  5. Under Startup Options, click to select the check box next to Log on at Startup.
  6. Under Options for Enterprise Networking, click to select the check box to Log on to Windows NT or LAN Manager Domain. The Domain Name field should be set to your Small Business Server domain name.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.

You must exit and return to Windows before the changes will take effect.

Accessing Server Resources

You should now be able to connect the Windows for Workgroups computer to your Small Business Server.

To log on to the server:

  1. At the Windows logon screen, type a valid user account name and password.
  2. Click OK.

After successfully logging onto the server, you can access share folders and printers.

To access shared folders:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click File Manager.
  2. On the Disk Menu, click Connect Network Drive.
  3. In the Path box, enter \\servername, where servername is the name of your Small Business Server, and click OK.


A list of shared folders opens. There are three folders you should know about.

    • Company: This folder is created during server installation. Everyone on the network has access to this folder.
    • Users: This folder is created during server installation. This folder corresponds to the directory on the server where all the users' personal folders reside.
    • Username: When you create a new user account using the Add User wizard, the wizard automatically creates a shared folder called username. This is the user's personal folder.
  1. Select a shared folder on the list and click OK.


This process maps a network drive from the Windows for Workgroups computer to the Small Business Server shared folder.

To access shared printers:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click Printer Manager.
  2. On the Printer menu, click Connect Network Printer.
  3. In the Path box, enter \\servername, where servername is the name of your Small Business Server, and click OK.
  4. Select a printer from the list and click OK.

You have just captured a printer. The user can start printing documents by using the Print command available on the File menu of most applications.

Installing Small Business Server Client Applications

Before the Windows for Workgroups user can start using all of the Small Business Server services, you must first install the necessary client applications. Each client application is installed separately.

During installation of Small Business Server, a shared folder is created that contains the files for the client applications. You need to map a drive from the Windows for Workgroups computer to the shared folder named Clients.

To map a drive to the Clients Folder:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click File Manager.
  2. On the Disk menu, click Connect Network Drive.
  3. In the Path box, type \\servername\Clients, where servername is the name of your Small Business Server.
  4. Click OK.

Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer

Microsoft Internet Explorer is a Web browser. It is used to view Internet and intranet sites.

To install Internet Explorer:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click File Manager.
  2. Go to the drive mapped to the Clients folder and open the MS folder.
  3. Open the IE folder and run Msie30.exe.
  4. Follow the instructions for installing Internet Explorer.

Installing Microsoft Exchange Client Software

Microsoft Exchange is the Windows for Workgroups e-mail client software. It allows the user to send and receive e-mail.

To install Microsoft Exchange Client software:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click File Manager.
  2. Go to the drive mapped to the Clients folder and open the MS folder.
  3. Open the Exchange folder and run Win16\Setup.exe.
  4. Follow the instructions for installing Microsoft Exchange Client software.
  5. Select Typical Installation when you are asked to pick an installation type.
  6. Close any open programs and click Restart Windows when prompted.
  7. After the computer restarts, start Microsoft Exchange.
  8. Follow the instructions for configuring Microsoft Exchange.
  9. When you are asked for server and mailbox name, enter the name of your Small Business Server and your user name.
  10. Accept the default name and path for your mailbox file.

Installing Microsoft Schedule+

Microsoft Schedule+ allows Windows for Workgroups users to keep track of their appointments. You must install the Microsoft Exchange Client software before you can install Schedule+.

To install Microsoft Schedule+:

  1. In the Microsoft Exchange program group, double-click Microsoft Schedule+.
  2. Follow the instructions for installing Microsoft Schedule+.
  3. Accept the default name and path for your schedule file.
  4. Click OK.

Installing Microsoft Modem Sharing Client Software

Microsoft Modem Sharing Client software provides the user with Modem Sharing Service on the server. This service is necessary if the user wants to dial out to a service, such as Lexis/Nexis, from his or her computer.

To install Microsoft Modem Sharing Client Software:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click File Manager.
  2. Go to the drive mapped to the Clients folder and open the MS folder.
  3. Open the Modemshr folder and run Setup.exe.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Click Select Location to change the destination path where files will be copied, or accept the default path specified.
  6. Click Install.
  7. Close any open programs and click Restart Windows when prompted.

To connect to a modem pool:

  1. In the Modem Sharing program group, double-click Modem Sharing Client.
  2. On the Port menu, click Connect.
  3. In the drop-down list, select a COM port that you would like to map.
  4. In the Network Path box, enter the path to the modem pool.
  5. Click OK.

Installing Microsoft Fax Client Software

The Microsoft Fax Client software is not available for computers running Windows for Workgroups.

Installing Microsoft Proxy Client Software

The Microsoft Proxy Client software allows computers to run RealAudio, VDOLive, and other Internet applications.

To install Microsoft Proxy Client software:

  1. In the Main program group, double-click File Manager.
  2. Connect a network drive to the Clients folder on your Small Business Server.
  3. Open the MS folder.
  4. Open the Proxy folder and run Setup.exe.
  5. Follow the instructions for installing the Microsoft Proxy Client software.
