SYMPTOMS

When you receive a mail message containing a shortcut to a mail folder, you cannot drag the shortcut from the mail message to the Outlook bar.

CAUSE

Microsoft Outlook 2000 does not support this procedure.

RESOLUTION

There are two methods of adding folder shortcuts to the Outlook bar, depending on if the shortcut is to a public folder or to a shared private folder.

Public Folder Shortcut

If the shortcut is to a public folder, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Folder List to display the folder list.
  2. Click to select the desired public folder.
  3. Drag the selected folder from the folder list to the Outlook bar.

Private Folder Shortcut

If the shortcut is to a shared private folder in an Exchange Server Mailbox, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Services.
  2. Click Properties for Microsoft Exchange Server.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click Add to specify the shared mailbox you want to access. This will add that mailbox to your folder list.
  4. Click OK three times to quit.
  5. On the View menu, click Folder List to display the desired folder.
  6. Drag the selected folder from the folder list to the Outlook bar.

MORE INFORMATION

Even though you cannot drag a folder shortcut directly from a message to the Outlook bar, you can drag it to the desktop. This creates an icon that starts Outlook with the focus on the appropriate folder.
