SYMPTOMS
When you use the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 2.0 Mail, you may notice stranded messages (.eml files without a corresponding .rtr or .ltr file) in the queue (Inetpub\Mailroot\Queue) directory. This problem may occur with a high volume of mail traffic.
CAUSE
This is caused by two threads trying to simultaneously process the same message.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT version 4.0. For more information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) version 2.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.
