For information about how to edit the registry, view the “Changing Keys And Values” Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the “Add and Delete Information in the Registry” and “Edit Registry Data” Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

The information for your newsgroup subscriptions is stored in the Sublist.dat file or the registry. To back up or restore your subscribed newsgroups, verify that you can view hidden files on your computer, and then continue to the Back Up Newsgroups or Restore Newsgroups sections of this article:

Windows 98

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. On the View menu, click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. In the Advanced Settings box, click Show All Files, and then click OK.

Computers Without the Internet Explorer 4.0 Windows Desktop Update

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. On the View menu, click Options.
  3. On the View tab, click Show All Files, and then click OK.

Computers with the Internet Explorer 4.0 Windows Desktop Update

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. On the View menu, click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. In the Advanced Settings box, click Show All Files, and then click OK.

Back Up Newsgroups

To back up your subscribed newsgroups, follow these steps:

Outlook Express 4.x:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

  2. In the Named box, type “sublist.dat” (without the quotation marks), and then click Find Now. Note that by default, the Sublist.dat file is located in the following folder

    WindowsDataExpress<news server>

    where <news server> is the name of the appropriate news server.

  3. Right-click the Sublist.dat file, point to Send To, and then click My Documents.

  4. Quit the Find tool.

Outlook Express 5:

To back up your newsgroups, export the following registry key as a file named Newsgroup.reg:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERAccount

Restore Newsgroups

To restore your subscribed newsgroups, follow these steps:

Outlook Express 4.x:

  1. Click Start, point to Documents, and then click My Documents.

  2. Right-click the Sublist.dat file, click Cut, and then close the My Documents folder.

  3. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

  4. Navigate to the following folder

    WindowsDataExpress<news server>

    where <news server> is the name of the appropriate news server.

  5. Right-click the newsgroup folder, and then click Paste.

  6. Quit Windows Explorer.

Outlook Express 5:

To restore your newsgroups, double-click the Newsgroup.reg file you created as a backup.
