SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows 98 on an NEC or Packard Bell computer that includes a Sound 4 WinModem, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • The modem does not appear in Device Manager.
  • When you run the diagnostics utility in the Modems tool, you receive the following error message:

    Port already open

  • Dial-Up Networking programs cannot gain access to the modem.
  • When you start Windows, you receive the following error message:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall program or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
