WORKAROUND
Use one of the following methods to work around the problem described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
Method 1: Map Root to the Server Folder
Map root to the server folder that contains the document.
For example, in the example described in the Symptoms section of this article, map root to the Administrative Stuff folder, and then open the document in Word 97 for Windows.
NOTE: The map root of drive K:\ in the example would become "\\servername\volumename\Administrative Stuff", and the document name to open would be K:\Primary Project Plan.doc
Method 2: Use the DontUseUNC Option
The DontUseUNC registry setting allows the use of drive letter mappings and disables the use of Universal Naming Convention (UNC).
NOTE: This method may not work in all cases experiencing the problem described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
For additional information about the DontUseUNC option, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
171406 WD97: How to Disable the Use of UNC
Method 3: Open the Document from Windows Explorer
In Windows Explorer, double-click the document to open it in Word 97 for Windows.
