Can't open files created in foreign language version

Article ID: 190378

Article Last Modified on 1/3/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q190378

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a presentation created in a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (Asian) version of PowerPoint, you may receive one of the following messages:

Sorry, the file cannot be opened with this version of PowerPoint.

Sorry, this type of file cannot be opened by PowerPoint.

This error occurs when you are using a non-Asian version of PowerPoint to open a presentation created and saved in Asian PowerPoint format.

CAUSE

The Asian languages use a different character set than non-Asian languages. Because Asian languages have many, many characters, Asian PowerPoint files must be stored in a double-byte format. The non-Asian versions of PowerPoint save their files in a single-byte format.

The non-Asian version of PowerPoint 97 can open the double-byte format.

RESOLUTION

You can open and read Asian PowerPoint files in PowerPoint 97 by installing the Asian fonts from the ValuPack folder on the PowerPoint 97 compact disc.
