Cable Internet services come in two types. The first generation cable Internet services use a TV cable connection and device that combines high-speed downloading with nominal-speed uploading through your telephone line. Such devices, often referred to as hybrid or duplex modems, are attached to a network card instead of the traditional modem through a serial port.
Satellite dish systems, such as DirecPC, use similar devices to combine upload and download functions in a higher-speed environment.
The second-generation cable Internet services use a TV cable for two-way communications. This type of cable modem does not require a telephone line.

To use Outlook with a cable modem:
- On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
- Click the Internet E-mail account, and then click Properties.
- Click the Connection tab, and then click to select Connect using my local area network (LAN).
- Click OK, and then click Close.
