SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

A required .dll file is missing
Msvcirt.dll

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if an incompatible version of the Msvcrt40.dll file exists on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the Msvcrt40.dll file located in the Windows\System folder, and then extract a new copy of the Msvcrt40.dll file from the Ie4mfc40.cab file located on your computer or your Internet Explorer CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder.

NOTE: If you do not have the Ie4mfc40.cab file on your computer and you do not have an Internet Explorer CD-ROM, connect to following Microsoft Web site to download the Internet Explorer Setup files:

If you do not have access to the Web site, you can order Internet Explorer 4.01 on CD-ROM from Microsoft at (800) 360-7561.

NOTE: You may be required to restart the computer to an MS-DOS prompt to rename the Msvcrt40.dll file if the file is in use by Windows. To do so, use the following steps:

  1. Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following lines, and then press ENTER after each line:

          cd\windows\system
          ren msvcrt40.dll msvcrt40.old
                                    
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Extract a new copy of the Msvcrt40.dll file from the Ie4mfc40.cab file located on your computer or your Internet Explorer CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder.
