SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to copy a file to a compressed folder or delete a file from a compressed folder, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot create output file.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the compressed folder resides inside another compressed folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, extract the compressed folder to the desktop, copy or delete the file you want, and then drag the extracted folder to the parent compressed folder.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click the parent compressed folder.
  2. Click the compressed folder into which you want to copy the file or from which you want to delete the file.
  3. On the File menu, click Extract, and then click Browse.
  4. In the Browse For Folder window, click Desktop, and then click OK.
  5. Click Next, and then click Finish.
  6. Close the parent compressed folder.
  7. Copy the file to or delete the file from the extracted folder on the desktop, and then close the extracted folder.
  8. Drag the extracted folder to the parent compressed folder.
  9. When you are prompted to replace the existing file, click Yes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Plus! 98, version 1.0.

MORE INFORMATION

When you follow these steps, a duplicate copy of the extracted folder remains on the desktop. To delete the duplicate folder, drag it to the Recycle Bin.
