SUMMARY

This article discusses the maximum video frame rate per second (fps) that the following versions of NetMeeting can transmit and receive:

  • Microsoft NetMeeting versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.1 Service Pack 1, 3.01 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft NetMeeting versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.1 Service Pack 1, 3.01 for Windows NT Workstation 4.0
  • Microsoft NetMeeting versions 2.0, 2.1, 3.01 for Windows 98

MORE INFORMATION

NetMeeting sends and receives video at the maximum fps of the lowest speed processor and the capturing, sending and receiving hardware of the two computers in the session.

The following versions of NetMeeting can send and receive up to 30 fps on a computer with a Pentium Pro and Pentium II processor (if the capturing, sending, and receiving hardware is capable of 30 fps or greater):

  • Microsoft NetMeeting versions 2.1 Service Pack 1, 3.01 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft NetMeeting versions 2.1 Service Pack 1, 3.01 for Windows 98
  • Microsoft NetMeeting versions 2.1 Service Pack 1, 3.01 for Windows NT Workstation 4.0

The following versions of NetMeeting can send and receive up to 17 fps:

  • NetMeeting versions 2.0, or 2.1 or earlier for Windows 95 or NT Workstation 4.0

Maximum FPS of NetMeeting 2.1 Service Pack 1 for Each Processor

Use the following table to determine the maximum fps of NetMeeting 2.1 Service Pack 1 for each processor.

You can send video in three different formats by using the Send Image Size option:

Large - common interchange format (CIF)
Medium - quarter common interchange format (QCIF)
Small - sub quarter common interchange format (SQCIF)

The actual fps may be less for your connection based on the hardware, bandwidth, and the programs that are running on each computer:

                Video
   Processor format FPS
   --------- ------ ---

   486 SQCIF 7
                QCIF 7
                CIF 3

   Pentium SQIF 15
                QCIF 15
                CIF 7

   Pentium Pro SQCIF 30
   -or- QCIF 30
   Pentium II CIF 15

Notes:

  • Multiple-processor boards are not included in these calculations.
  • NetMeeting versions 2.0 and 2.1 or earlier can send and receive up to 17 fps with similar hardware configurations.

Example 1

Computer A has a 486 processor and computer B has a Pentium processor, the maximum frame rate that the two computers can send and receive with QCIF is 7 fps.

Example 2

Both computer A and computer B have Pentium processors, the maximum frame rate that the two computers can send and receive with QCIF is 15 fps.

Example 3

Computer A has a 486 processor and computer B has a Pentium processor. If computer A sends video using CIF and computer B sends video with SQCIF, computer A sends 3 fps with CIF and receives 7 fps of video with SQCIF. Computer B receives 3 fps at CIF and sends 7 fps of video at SCQIF.
