SYMPTOMS
E-mail message attachment icons may not display when using the Preview Pane in Microsoft Outlook 98.
CAUSE
The display of the attachment icon depends upon a combination of factors:
- The e-mail format used by the message sender.
- The default e-mail format used by the message receiver.
- The Outlook 98 installation options of the message receiver.

This article describes the result of the various sending and receiving combinations for each of the following Outlook 98 installation options:
- Corporate/Workgroup using Exchange Server (CW-EX).
- Corporate/Workgroup using Internet Mail (CW-IM).
- Internet Mail Only (IMO).
The table below illustrates the combination of conditions under which the message receiver (Receiver) can see, (YES) or not see, (NO) the attachment icon in the Preview Pane.

To open an e-mail attachment that does not appear in the Preview Pane:
- Click the paperclip icon on the right end of the Preview Pane Header Bar and click the name of the attachment.

- Open the mail message and double-click the attachment icon.
To Change the Default E-mail Format
To change the default e-mail format, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Mail Format tab, Click to select the desired format from the "Send in this message format" list.
- Click Apply and OK.
