CD-ROM Drive Icon Appears for a Hard Disk

SYMPTOMS

When you open My Computer, your hard disk icon may appear as a CD-ROM icon. If you double-click (or right-click and then click Open) the CD-ROM in My Computer, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot find autorun.exe.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Autorun.inf file is in the root folder of your hard disk.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the Autorun.inf file to Autorun.xxx. To do so, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type autorun.inf, and then click Find Now.
  3. Right-click the Autorun.inf in the list of found files, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Read-Only check box to clear it, and then click OK.
  5. Right-click the Autorun.inf in the list of found files, and then click Rename.
  6. Type autorun.xxx, and then press ENTER.
  7. Restart your computer.
