Article ID: Q185211

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run a service or an application that uses the COM ports or Serial.sys, Windows NT Server may stop responding (hang) and the following system event appears in the Event Viewer:

Description: The server was unable to allocate from the system
nonpaged pool because the pool was empty.

CAUSE

The computer running Windows NT Server is running out of nonpaged pool memory. This happens because Serial.sys is allocating memory that is never released. This problem can happen when you share IRQs with COM port devices.
