SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, you are unable to insert the COMMAND symbol (ASCII 17) into a document when you use Chicago font and press CONTROL+Q.

CAUSE

Characters that require the CONTROL key (for example, the COMMAND symbol) for insertion are unavailable, because the CONTROL key is used for shortcut keys in Microsoft programs.

WORKAROUND

To insert the COMMAND symbol into a Word document, either of the following methods.

Method 1: Mac OS 8.x

If you are running Mac OS 8.x, follow these steps to insert the COMMAND symbol:

1. On the Font menu, click Chicago.
2. Press CONTROL+OPTION+Q.

If you are running Mac OS 8.x using Chicago and Charcoal system fonts, the COMMAND character can be inserted by pressing CONTROL+OPTION+17.

Method 2: Use Apple Key Caps

If you are using Apple Key Caps, follow these steps to insert the COMMAND symbol:

1. On the Apple menu, click Key Caps.
2. On the Key Caps menu, click Chicago.
3. Press CONTROL+Q to insert the COMMAND symbol.
4. Select the COMMAND symbol in the Key Caps box.
5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
6. Switch to Word and place the insertion point where you want the COMMAND symbol.
7. On the Font menu, click Chicago.
8. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

After the COMMAND symbol is entered, you can save it as an AutoText entry for use at any time. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Select the COMMAND symbol (which is now in the document).
2. On the Insert menu, point to AutoText, and then click New.
3. In the "Please name your AutoText entry" box, type a descriptive name for your AutoText entry, and then click OK.

To insert the symbol from your AutoText entry, follow these steps:

1. On the Insert menu, point to AutoText, and then click AutoText.
2. Click to select the AutoText entry you want, and then click Insert.

To assign a keystroke to this AutoText entry, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
2. Click Keyboard.
3. In the Categories list, click AutoText. In the Commands list, click the name of the AutoText entry representing the COMMAND symbol.
4. In the "Press New Shortcut Key" box, press a keystroke combination (for example, press CONTROL+Q), and then click Assign.
5. Click Close twice.
