SYMPTOMS

When you view the Windows or Windows\System folder as a Web page on a Windows 98-based computer, you may receive the following message:

Warning

Modifying the contents of this folder may cause your programs to stop working correctly.

To view the contents of this folder, click Show Files.


RESOLUTION

To prevent this message from being displayed on your Windows 98-based computer, rename the existing Folder.htt file located in the Windows and Windows\System folders to Folder.bak, and then copy the Folder.htt file located in the Windows\Web folder to the Windows and Windows\System folders. For information about how to rename or copy a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "renaming" or "copying" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "Renaming files" or "Copying files" topic.

NOTE: The Folder.htt file has the hidden attribute. Verify that you can view hidden files on your Windows 98-based computer. To do so, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
