SYMPTOMS
When you set up a Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server network, it is not possible to install the client applications onto the client systems over a Remote Access Service (RAS) dial-up connection.
CAUSE
The client applications were designed to be installed over a local area network (LAN) connection. If all applications are installed, they need approximately 90 MB of disk space. An installation of this size takes a considerably long time over a modem and there is a possibility of the telephone line dropping the call during the installation.
RESOLUTION
To manually install the client applications, install the client applications from CD-ROM. To do this, use the following procedure:
For Small Business Server 4.0 and Small Business Server 4.0a Installations
- Insert Small Business Server 4.0 or 4.0a CD-ROM number 2 in the CD-ROM drive of the client computer.
- Locate the "MS" folder on the root of the CD-ROM. For each application, run the appropriate Setup program from the appropriate subdirectory under the \MS directory. Installation points are as follows:
- * \MS\Exchange directory. This is the Exchange 5.0 client. It is recommended that you install Outlook 98 or 2000 on the client instead of this application. To install, run Setup.exe.
- * \MS\Fax. For instructions on installing the Small Business Server Fax Client, see the following:

- * \MS\Ie\I386. This is Internet Explorer version 3.0. Do not run Setup (Msie30.exe) if you have a later version of Internet Explorer installed.
- * \MS\ModemShr. For instructions on installing the Small Business Server Modem Sharing Client:

- * \MS\NTSP3. This is Windows NT Service Pack 3 for NT Workstation clients. Do not run this program if your NT Service Pack is level 4 or higher.
- * \MS\Outlook\i386. Run Setup.exe from this folder to install Outlook 97. Do not run this program if you have a newer version of Outlook already installed.
- * \MS\Proxy. Run Setup.exe to install the Proxy 1.0 client. Do not install this program if your Small Business Server is running Proxy 2.0. To install the Proxy 2.0 client, run the command \\<SBSSERVER>\Mspclnt\Setup.exe
where <SBSSERVER> is the name of your Small Business Server.
For Small Business Server 4.5 Installations
All applications are located on the CD-ROM number 3 of the Small Business Server 4.5 set in the \SBSClients\MS folder under their associated names. Outlook 2000 ships on a separate CD-ROM. Installation points are as follows:
- For Small Business Server Fax Client and Modem Sharing client installation, refer to the following:

- To install the Proxy 2.0 client, run the command \\<SBSSERVER>\Mspclnt\Setup.exe
where <SBSSERVER> is the name of your SBS server. - Outlook 2000 is installed from the Outlook 2000 CD-ROM that ships with Small Business Server 4.5. If your copy of Small Business Server 4.5 shipped with Office 2000, you may install Outlook and other Office components from the CD-ROM media that shipped with Small Business Server.
- Service Pack 4 for NT may be installed on Windows NT 4.0 Workstation Clients by running Sp4i386.exe from the \SBSClients\MS\WINNTSP4 directory. Do not run this program if your NT Service Pack is level 5 or higher.
