How to Install The Word 97 Weblinks Help File
To install the Word 97 Weblinks Help file, follow these steps:
- Download the WD9701hlp.exe file from the Microsoft Office Web site.
- Quit Word 97 if it is running.
- Double-click the Wd9701hlp.exe program file on your hard disk to start the Setup program.
- In the confirmation dialog box that appears, click Yes.
When installation is complete, click OK in the confirmation dialog box.
How To Use the Word 97 Weblinks Help File
After installing the Weblinks Help file, many help topics will have a hyperlink near the bottom of the help topic, called "Link to web or other sources." Clicking this link will connect you to a related Microsoft Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft Technical Support Web site.
To see one of the updated help topics after installing the Weblinks Help file, follow these steps:
- Click the Office Assistant, type "Mail Merge with Access," click Search, and then click "Mail Merge Data Sources."
- Click the "Link to the web or other sources" hyperlink at the bottom of the help topic.
You should be connected to the Internet via your Internet service provider, and a Microsoft Knowledge Base article on a related topic should be displayed.

Troubleshooting the Word 97 Weblinks Help File
If the Weblinks Help file gets installed but the Word Main Help Index file (Wdmain8.gid) is not regenerated, querying on help topics may not bring up the new information. To correct this problem, follow these steps:
- Ensure that the Weblinks Help file (Wd9701.hlp) is located in the same directory as the Word Main Help file (Wdmain8.hlp). The default location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office.
- Delete the Word Main Help Index file (Wdmain8.gid). NOTE: A new Wdmain8.gid index file will be created the next time you start Help.
- Start Microsoft Word 97 and use the steps in the "How To Use The Word 97 Weblinks Help File" section of this article to test the help file.
