SUMMARY

Windows 2000 includes a Generic/Text Only printer driver that acts as a null printer driver.

MORE INFORMATION

Earlier versions of Windows NT do not include a true null printer driver. Instead, the printing system adds carriage returns or escape codes to control the placement of text. With the Generic/Text Only printer driver included in Windows 2000, you can print text from a program without printer driver-specific information (such as carriage returns, spaces, or escape codes) being added to your print job. When you print from a program you are running locally, the program may add characters, but the null printer driver does not. In addition, extra information is not included in raw datatype print jobs sent from network clients.
