OFF98: System or Memory Errors Appear or Program Hangs When You Use RAM Charger to Allocate Memory

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Visual Basic Editor in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you may receive one of the following error messages:

The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an
error of type 1 occurred.

You should save your work in other open applications and restart the
computer.

-or-


The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an
error of type 25 occurred.

When you use the Conditional Sum wizard or the Lookup Wizard in Microsoft Excel, your computer stops responding (hangs).

When you click Next in the File Conversion Wizard, you receive the following error message:

Sorry, a system error occurred.
"Microsoft Excel"
error type 10

When you click Save As HTML on the file menu in Microsoft Excel, your computer stops responding.

When you click Preferences on the Tools menu in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, Word loses focus and you cannot dismiss the Preferences dialog box.

When you use the Letter Wizard in Microsoft Word, you receive the following error messages:

There is insufficient memory or disk space. Close extra windows and save your work.

Run-time error '5272':

There is insufficient memory or disk space. Close extra windows and save your work.

When you use the Envelope Wizard in Microsoft Word, you receive the following error messages:

Method 'Show' of object 'Dialog' failed

The application "Microsoft Word" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 2 occurred.

You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.

When you click the Drawing Button on the standard toolbar in one of the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs, you receive the following error message:

There is not enough memory to load the Microsoft Office 98 Drawing shared library.

CAUSE

You may receive any of the error messages that are described in the "Symptoms" section if you are using RAM Charger to allocate memory to the Office 98 programs.

WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, prevent RAM Charger from managing the memory that is allocated to the Office programs. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Point to Control Panels on the Apple menu, and then click RAM Charger General Settings.
  2. Click Application Settings.
  3. Click the disk partition on which you have installed Office 98 in the Disk list.
  4. Click Microsoft Clip Gallery in the list. Click to clear the Ram Charged check box.
  5. Click "Do Not Open Notes."
  6. Repeat steps 4 through 5 for the following items:

    Microsoft Excel
    Microsoft Graph
    Microsoft Help
    Microsoft Help Runtime
    Microsoft Office First Run
    Microsoft PowerPoint
    Microsoft System Information
    Microsoft Word
    MS Organization Chart 2.0
    ODBC Setup PPC

  7. Close the RAM Charger Application Settings window.
