SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you copy a base calendar to another project file, modify a base calendar, or set a base calendar to a resource, you may receive the following error message:

The argument value is not valid. Check that the value is spelled correctly, and that it is of the type that this argument expects.

-or-

There is a problem with the Calendar name. The Calendar name does not exist. Click a Calendar in the list, then press ENTER.

In addition, you may receive one of the following error messages, depending on your operating system.

Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:

WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll

-or-

WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE

Windows NT

An Application Error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Winproj.exe
Exception access violation (0xc0000005), address: 0x3002ec85

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you try to copy, edit, or assign a base calendar with a name longer than 51 characters.

NOTE: You can only make the base calendar name longer than 51 characters if you edit the project outside of Microsoft Project 98. For example, by saving a project in a database, and editing it in Microsoft Access or a similar program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, rename the base calendar by following these steps:

  1. Open the project in the database.
  2. Open the Calendar table.
  3. In the CalendarName field, change the Calendar name to have 51 characters or fewer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Project 98 allows a maximum of 51 characters when you create a calendar name. In a project within a database, you can create or modify a calendar name to have more than 51 characters. In Microsoft Project 98, opening this project from a database does not generate an error until you access the calendar.
