SYMPTOMS
When you scroll through a Microsoft Word document, you may see one or more of the following effects:
- The ruler redraws itself and you see multiple "rulers" on the screen. -or-
- The status bar redraws itself and you see multiple "status bars" on the screen.
Or, the screen may fluctuate under the following conditions:
- You have the PowerBook toolbar displayed. -and-
- The document is partially underneath the PowerBook toolbar.
CAUSE
These problems occur in Normal view when you use the Macintosh Operating System Version, 8.0 with a PowerBook 3400. Apple has confirmed this to be a problem with a QuickDraw acceleration module specific to the PowerBook 3400.
WORKAROUND
To work around these problems, use the appropriate method for your situation.
Turn Off the Control Strip
To turn off the Control Strip, you must turn off the Control Strip Control Panel and the Control Strip Extension in the Extensions Manager Control Panel. Then restart the computer.
Ruler and Status Bar
To scroll through your Word document without screen refresh problems, use page layout view by clicking Page Layout on the View menu.
PowerBook Toolbar
To prevent screen fluctuations, either turn off the toolbar or resize Word so it does not appear under the PowerBook toolbar.

Apple has reported that this also occurred in a PowerBook 2400, but was fixed for the PowerBook G3 in System 8.1
