SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft Word, the following features are automatically turned off:
- AutoCorrect
- AutoFormatting As You Type
- Displaying Tip of the Day upon starting Word
- Automatic start of the Letter Wizard
- Background grammar checking
CAUSE
This problem occurs on low memory Macintosh computers that do not meet the minimum requirements to run Microsoft Word correctly, such as a PowerMac 8100/80 with 16 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM).

This list contains the system requirements of Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition (as printed on the software box):
- Any PowerPC-processor-based, Mac OS-compatible system (a clock speed of at least 120 MHz is recommended).
- Apple Mac OS System 7.5 or later (System 7.5.5 or later is recommended).
- 16 MB of RAM to run applications individually; more memory is required to run additional applications simultaneously (32 MB is recommended).
- 90 MB of available hard disk space for easy installation; 49-120 MB for custom installation, depending on configuration.
- A CD-ROM drive (or connection to a local area network if installing over a network).
- Monitor or display supporting 16 grays or 256 colors, with 640 x 400 or higher resolution.
