SYMPTOMS

When you enable Thumbnail view for your folders and configure Windows Explorer or My Computer to be viewed as a Web page, the Thumbnail images for some file types may not be displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you remove and re-create the file association for a file type. The registry entry that is used by the Windows Desktop Update component to display Thumbnail images is not updated properly when you re-create the file association.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

  • Reinstall the Windows Desktop Update component. For information about removing and installing the Windows Desktop Update component, click the following article to view it in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Click Start, click Run, type the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:

    regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01 for Windows 95, and in Windows 98.
