SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print from on eof the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Program: drive:\Program Files\programname\program.exe.
Abnormal program termination.

where drive is the letter of the hard disk on which the program is installed, programname is the name of one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, and program.exe is the program executable file.

When you click OK, the program quits.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur for either of the following reasons:

  • The printer driver for your printer is damaged.


-or-

  • There are mismatched or outdated system files installed on your computer.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Remove the Printer Driver

To remove the printer driver:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the printer for which you want to remove the driver, and then click Delete.
  3. When you are prompted to delete files that are only used for this printer, click Yes.

Install the Latest Printer Driver for Your Printer

Contact your printer manufacturer to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest version of the printer driver for your printer.

Install the Latest Versions of the System Files

Download the Run-Time Repair Tool (Runtifix.exe) to install the latest versions of the system files.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

The Runtifix.exe file contains the following files:

  • Asycfilt.dll
  • Mfc42.dll
  • Msvcrt.dll
  • Oleaut32.dll
  • Olepro32.dll
  • Stdole2.tlb

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. To install the Runtifix.exe file:

  1. Double-click Runtifix.exe.
  2. Click Yes to continue if Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later is installed on your computer.
  3. Click OK.
  4. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.


MORE INFORMATION

If the issue continues to occur, or if you are unable to install the latest version of the printer driver for your printer:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click any other printer that is manufactured by the manufacturer of the printer for which you removed the driver in the "Resolution" section of this article, and then click Delete.
  3. When you are prompted to delete files that are only used for this printer, click Yes.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to remove the printer drivers for all of the printers that are manufactured by the manufacturer of the printer for which you removed the driver in step 2.
  5. Install or reinstall the latest version of the printer driver for your printer.
