Programs That Use RPC Cannot Connect to the RPC Server |

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 95
SYMPTOMS
Windows 95 programs that use Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs), such as the Remote Registry or System Monitor tool, may be unable to connect to an RPC server.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if all of the following conditions exists:
- Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the only protocol installed.
- Domain Name Service (DNS) name resolution is enabled.
- The Fully Qualified Domain Name (the DNS host name plus the DNS domain name) contains more than 31 characters.
RESOLUTION
This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OSR2, and later versions of this file:
RPCLTS3.DLL version 4.00.951 dated 6/20/96 9,168 bytes
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2). An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time.
