HOWTO: Render a Shadow Pass

The information in this article applies to:
- Softimage 3D for IRIX, versions 3.5, 3.51
- Softimage 3D for Windows NT, versions 3.01, 3.51
SUMMARY
This procedure shows you how to create shadow effects in a scene:
- From the matter module, choose Atmosphere -> Ambience and change the RGB values to 0,0,0.
- Hide all the lights (choose the Hide command) except the one that you want to produce the shadows.
- Select the light and change the RGB values to its negative equivalent (i.e.: so, 1,1,1 becomes -1,-1,-1).
- Choose Light -> Edit and change the Umbra Intensity and Penumbra Factor to their negative equivalent.
The rendered frames should be black with white shadows.
If you have several light sources, render each shadow separately and mix them in composite. You can then render all the lights with a -1 setting and modify the opacity in composite.
