SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Project 98 on the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system, you receive the following error:

Setup could not open the file c:\WinNt\system32\comctl32.dll. It is in use by another application.

CAUSE

You receive this error when the following are true:

• Microsoft Office 97 or one of its components has been installed or started during the current session of Windows. -and-
  

• The computer has not been rebooted.

WORKAROUND

To work around this error, restart your computer before you install Microsoft Project 98.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the version of Microsoft Project listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
