The Internet Mail Enhancement Patch for Microsoft Outlook 97 (IMEP) is an updated Internet Mail service for use with Microsoft Outlook 97. This article describes the improvements included in the updated service.

The following improvements are available when using the Internet Mail Enhancement Patch:
Improved Delivery Options
With the IMEP you can specify to leave a copy of mail on the server when you download messages. This allows you to download the messages again later or from another location.
Support for Multiple Accounts
With the IMEP, you can build a messaging profile that includes more than one Internet Mail account. You can check mail from several accounts using one profile even if the mail providers use entirely separate dial-up access numbers. You can also combine different access methods, such as a modem connection combined with a network connection.

Support for Reply Marks
With the IMEP, you can specify have the original text in a reply to a message prefixed with the ">" character. You can also choose to use the "|" or ":" characters to prefix the text.
Support for Line Wrapping
You can choose to wrap text a specific number of characters when sending messages. This feature is useful when you send e-mail to other mail clients that do not have an automatic word wrap feature.

Improved Presentation of Message Header
The IMEP shows the RFC-822 message header in the Options tab of the message. The original Internet Mail service required that you install an .ecf file and use the Properties command on the File menu to see the message header.
Support for a Reply Address
The IMEP allows you to specify a different address as a Reply Address for your messages. For example, you can send messages through one e-mail account, JRS@company.com, and specify that you want replies sent to JRSmith@msn.com.
Improved Handling of Message Icons
With the IMEP, messages you receive via the Internet will correctly display the read/unread icon.

Improved Handling of Blind Carbon Copy (BCC)Information
The IMEP Internet Mail service does not add BCC information to the RFC-822 header of the message.

Improved Handling of Undeliverable Messages
If the IMEP cannot completely download a message, it converts the problem message into a text file and attaches it to a message with an indication that the message was not complete. This allows successful delivery of subsequent messages.

Improved Setup for New Profiles
The IMEP setup will recognize if you have only one profile with no Internet Mail service and initiate the Internet Mail account setup screen.

Improved Handling of the RTF Switch
When you reply to a message, the option for "Always send to this recipient in Microsoft Exchange rich-text format" (RTF)is not selected by default. The IMEP now sets the RTF switch if the original message contained RTF.
Improved Handling of Received Date
Some Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) mail servers generate a received date format that the original Internet Mail service always interprets as "2/1/97". The IMEP Internet Mail service correctly handles and converts these received dates.
