SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to download images from your digital camera directly to any of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:
- The Data Source (.ds) file or TWAIN driver for the camera is not installed.
- The camera is not TWAIN-compatible. An example of such a camera is the Sony Mavica digital camera.
- The Data Source file for the camera is missing or damaged.
- The camera is not operating correctly, is not turned on, or is not connected to the computer.
- The digital camera is listed on the computer with its own drive letter.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.
Verify That a Data Source File for the Camera Is Installed
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type *.ds.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click any file, and then click Properties.
- On the Version tab, click Company Name. Note the manufacturer of the Data Source file for the camera.
- Repeat Step 5 for each file in the list of found files.
If you found a data source file for your camera, proceed to the next method. If you did not find a data source file for the camera, skip to the "Verify That a TWAIN driver for the Camera Exists" method.
Reinstall the Digital Camera Software
- Right-click the data source file for the manufacturer of your camera, and then click Rename.
- Type
filename.old, wherefilenameis the file name of the data source file for the camera. - Reinstall the software provided with the digital camera.
Attempt to download an image from your digital camera. If you continue to receive the error message, proceed to the next method.
Verify That a TWAIN Driver for the Camera Exists
- Insert the floppy disk provided with the digital camera into the floppy disk drive.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type twain.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, double-click the first folder in the list, and search for a file that is named Install.exe or Setup.exe. Repeat this step for any other folders in the list of found files.
- Contact the manufacturer of your digital camera for assistance on how to install the TWAIN driver for the camera.For information about how to contact , click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
If the list of found files is empty, the digital camera may not be TWAIN-compatible.
To find out if this is the case, contact the manufacturer of your digital camera to inquire if an updated, TWAIN-compatible driver is available for the camera.
Use Alternative Steps to Find the Digital Camera
Some digital cameras create their own drive when they are attached to the system. This drive can be found with the steps below:
- Within the project, click Open a picture.
- On the Open Pictures or Projects, click to select My Computer under Look for item in:.
- Click the plus (+) sign in front of My Computer.
- If your digital camera creates its own drive letter, it will be listed here. Click to select it.
You should now be able to access your photos directly from the drive.
WORKAROUND
All of the programs listed at the beginning of this article use TWAIN to download images from digital cameras.
If your camera is not TWAIN-compatible or the TWAIN driver for the camera is not installed on your computer, follow these steps to open images from the digital camera in Microsoft PhotoDraw or Microsoft Picture It!:
- Use the software provided with the digital camera to download the images from the camera.
- Save the images in the My Pictures folder on your computer in a common image file format (such as JPEG) that is supported by both PhotoDraw and Picture It!.
- Use PhotoDraw or Picture It! to open the images in the usual fashion.
