Memory Leak on CRS Client When Processing Retries for an Out of Disk Space Error Message

SYMPTOMS

If the target computer runs out of disk space during a replication, the CRS client computer will continue to attempt to finish the replication for 30 minutes before aborting the replication. During this retry period, the CRS client computer will leak memory. If space on the target computer is made available during this time period, the memory will be returned to the client computer while the replication continues. However, if the out of disk space condition continues for the full 30 minutes, the replication will abort. If CRS aborts the replication due to this condition, the memory will not be released, an event will not be written to the Windows NT event log and no e-mail notification will be sent.

RESOLUTION

This problem has been determined to be a bug in the release version of Crsdll.dll. To correct the problem, upgrade the servers to SP1 for MCIS version 1.0, which will update the Crsdll.dll file. Now when CRS receives an "out of disk space" error on the target computer, CRS will abort the replication immediately without attempting any retries. An event will be written to the Windows NT event log and e-mail will be sent (if this option is set).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0.
