SUMMARY

Microsoft Outlook 97 does not include a converter for the import of contacts from Symantec Act! version 3.0. The Act! Converter in Outlook only imports Act! version 2.0 files.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft Office 97 CD-ROM ValuPack contains additional import and export converters for Outlook. One of these converters imports Act! version 2.0 files; however, this converter does not work with Act! version 3.0 files.

Because Act! 3.0 stores its information in a dBase compatible format, you can use the steps in this article to import Act! 3.0 contacts into your Outlook Contacts folder.

NOTE: To successfully import Act! 3.0 files you must install the Data Access Pack from the ValuPack. The Data Access Pack provides the required files to import dBase files. The Data Access Pack is not included with a typical setup of Microsoft Office 97, Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition, or Microsoft Outlook 97. If the Data Access Pack is not installed you may receive the following error messages:

Cannot find MSXBSE35.DLL.

Or

An error has occurred in the Microsoft Outlook translator while initializing a translator to build a field map. Internal error: Unable to load File Access Engine (.FAE) DLL, additional Outlook translators can be installed from the ValuPack.

For information about installing the Data Access Pack and other ValuPack items, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

With the Data Access Pack installed, follow these steps to import Act! 3.0 files:

  1. On the Outlook File menu, click Import And Export to open the Import And Export Wizard.
  2. In the "Choose an action to perform" list, click "Import from Schedule+ or another program or file," and click Next.
  3. In the "Select file type to import from" list, click dBase and click Next.
  4. In the "File to import" box, type the path and file name of your Act! 3.0 file, or click the Browse button to find the file.
  5. Under Options, click the desired option for controlling duplicate items, and then click Next.
  6. In the "Select destination folder" list, click the folder where you want to store your contacts, and click Next. This is usually your default Outlook Contacts folder.
  7. Click Map Custom Fields if you want to specify how your Act! fields map to your Outlook Contacts fields. When you are satisfied with the map choices, click Finish to start the import process.

NOTE: Once you click Finish, you cannot cancel the import process. Importing may take several minutes, depending on the file size.
