XFOR: Adding Third DNS Server Causes SMTP to Not Use MX Records

Article ID: 159932

Article Last Modified on 9/30/2003

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 1.0 Service Pack 2

This article was previously published under Q159932

SYMPTOMS

When using Microsoft Mail Server, you may experience a parsing failure if the SMTP server fails to correctly parse the Domain Name System(DNS) names. However, the mail messages should still be delivered to the host indicated on the MX record.

Also, if you add a third DNS server, it can cause the SMTP server to use the "A" record when it should be using the MX record.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade to MCIS Service Pack 1 (SP1). The DNS list parsing code in the Smtpsvc.dll file which causes this problem was updated, and the SMTP server now correctly parses DNS names.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0.
