SYMPTOMS
After you run the Setup and the DirectX 3.0 setup for one of the programs listed at the top of this article, you may experience some of the following behaviors.
NOTE: These symptoms can occur if the updated video driver is not compatible with your computer hardware.
- Your computer may stop responding (hang) during the reboot, or it may reboot into Safe Mode. -or-
- When you restart the computer, Windows starts in 16-color VGA mode. -or-
- When you restart the computer, the Windows logo appears and then the screen goes blank. -or-
- After the computer reboots, you have strange horizontal lines running across your display. The system is locked up and does not respond to your keyboard or mouse.
CAUSE
This can occur if:
- Your video card driver is not DirectX compatible. -or-
- Your video resolution was set to 1024x768 High Color (16 bit) before you ran Setup.
RESOLUTION
Reinstall the original display drivers from the Display icon in the Control Panel. The computer should reboot normally.
NOTE: You may have to start the computer in Safe Mode to reinstall the drivers.
Obtain an updated, DirectX-compatible version of your video card driver from your video card manufacturer.

To run the programs listed at the top of this article, you should set your video card to 256 colors and screen resolution to 640x480.
NOTE: Many DirectX related problems have been resolved in the latest version of DirectX. Download the latest version of DirectX or, if you own a game that installs a newer version of DirectX, install DirectX from the newer game's disc.
