SYMPTOMS

When you try to play an embedded .wav file in Microsoft Publisher, you may receive the following error:

Another application is playing audio. You can either interrupt the application or wait until it is done. Then try using Sound Recorder again.

CAUSE

This error can occur if there is no sound card installed in the computer, or if your sound card is not listed in the Device Manager and you have Sound Recorder or Media Player installed.

RESOLUTION

If you have a Sound Card installed but it is not showing in the Windows Device Manager, then follow the steps below:

  1. Close all running programs.
  2. Click Start, then point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  3. Run the Add New Hardware Wizard and search for new hardware.

If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one if you want to play embedded sound files.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
