SUMMARY

When a Microsoft Exchange Server computer does not have sufficient disk space to run Edbutil /R /D, you must copy the database file (Priv.edb or Pub.edb) to another computer and then run Edbutil from there. When the repair is complete, you can copy the database file back to the original computer.

MORE INFORMATION

Be aware that if you run Edbutil, you may remove damaged data that might be required for the operation of the service, and this information may not be recoverable. Always back up the original database file before you run Edbutil.

To run Edbutil from another computer, follow these steps:

  1. Create an Exchsrvr directory with Bin and Mdbdata subdirectories on the new computer.
  2. Copy all the files in Bin directory of the original computer to the Bin directory of the new computer.
  3. Copy the database file from the Mdbdata directory of the original computer's to the Mdbdata directory of the new computer.

NOTE: If you can, copy the log files and Edb.chk to the new computer together with the database file. The log files may be corrupted and not the Store.
  4. Run Edbutil on the new computer as follows:

    Edbutil /d /r c:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv.edb

    -or-

    Edbutil /d /r c:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\pub.edb

NOTE: Make sure to specify the full path to the database file.

You may have to run Edbutil more than once to fix the database file.

  5. When Edbutil finishes, copy the database file back to the original computer.
