SUMMARY

This article describes how to configure the Microsoft Internet Mail client for Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft Internet Mail client requires you to use Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) and Post Office Protocol (POP3) mail servers to send and receive e-mail. Before you use Internet Mail, contact your mail administrator or your Internet service provider to find out if your mail servers will work properly with Internet Mail.

The first time you run Internet Mail, you are prompted for the following information:

  • The names of your SMTP and POP3 mail servers. (These are usually, but not always, the same.) These computers send and receive your mail.
  • Your full e-mail address. This is the address people use when sending mail to you over the Internet. For example, "johndoe@acme.com" (without the quotation marks).
  • Your account name and password on your mail servers. Your account name is usually, but not always, the part of your e-mail address to the left of the "@" character.

If you do not know this information, your Internet service provider or mail administrator should be able to provide it.

To add or change this information after Internet Mail is installed, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Internet Mail.
  2. On the Mail menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Server tab.
  4. Under Servers, in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box, type the name of your SMTP mail server.
  5. Under Servers, in the Incoming Mail (POP3) box, type the name of your POP3 mail server.
  6. Click OK.

Before you can view your e-mail in Internet Mail, you must establish a connection to your Internet service provider. For information about how to do this, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
