SUMMARY
Many Internet mail servers send and receive e-mail messages using only the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP), instead of the additional Post Office Protocol (POP3) that is supported by the Microsoft Internet Mail client.

Microsoft Internet Mail only supports the use of an SMTP mail server to send mail and a POP3 server to receive it. Although SMTP can allow you to receive mail, it does not have the security features of POP3.
If your Internet mail provider uses only an SMTP mail server, you can still use Internet Mail to read your mail with the use of a third-party program that emulates the POP3 protocol.
NOTE: This workaround is not supported by Microsoft. For information about using an SMTP-only mail provider with Internet Mail, contact your Internet service provider.
