Regression Error: "Output Range Must be a Valid Reference"

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In the Microsoft Excel products listed at the beginning of this article, when you use the Regression tool that is provided with the Analysis Toolpak, you may receive the following error message:

   Regression - Output Range must be a valid reference.

CAUSE

The error occurs if the name of sheet referenced for the output range contains a space character.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, rename the worksheet so that the worksheet's name does not contain a space character. Once you've completed the Regression, the worksheet can be renamed so that the name contains a space character.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
