Err Msg: An Exception 0E Has Occurred in Rpcss.exe... |
Q148804
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 95
SYMPTOMS
You may receive the following error message when you run a program that uses RPC (remote procedure calls):
An exception 0E has occurred in Rpcss.exe...
CAUSE
The Windows 95 RPC endpoint mapper service, Rpcss.exe, may not correctly handle reentrancy (more than one pending request). If the RPC endpoint mapper is concurrently accessed by two processes, or twice within one process, an invalid page fault (exception 0E) may occur in Rpcss.exe.
This behavior is somewhat timing-dependent, and may not occur consistently on all computers.
RESOLUTION
This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OSR2, and later versions of this file:
RPCSS.EXE version 4.00.951 dated 2/12/96 82,176 bytes
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2). An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
This issue is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.
MORE INFORMATION
Since this behavior is somewhat timing-dependent, debug versions of the program or Windows 95 may not exhibit this behavior at all.
