SYMPTOMS

When you attach a document to a template that exists in the same directory as the document, Word does not allow you to attach a different template with the same name as the current template.

WORKAROUND

Rename the template that resides in the same directory as the document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Word allows you to change which template is attached to a document. This feature allows you to use certain attributes of other templates in a document. The sharable attributes of templates are Macros, AutoText, Styles, and Toolbars.

Example

If a particular template contains an AutoText entry that you want to use, you can attach that template to the current document. Any AutoText entries are available to insert into the current document.

To attach a different template to the current document:

  1. Open the document.
  2. From the File menu, click Templates. For Document Template, you will notice which template the document is currently attached.
  3. Click Attach. Change to the folder where the template you want exists. Click the new template. Click OK.
  4. Any Macros, AutoText, Styles, or Toolbars that exist in the new template are now available for use in the current document.

NOTE: Microsoft Word can have only one template attached to a document at a time. Once the changes are made from the new template, you may want to reattach the previous template back to the current document before saving and closing the file.
