Setup Hangs on Compaq Laptop After Running Add Printer Wizard

  • Microsoft Windows 95





SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Windows 95 on your Compaq laptop computer, your computer may stop responding (hang) after Setup runs the Add Printer Wizard.



CAUSE

This problem may be caused by either of the following situations:

  • The third-party printer drivers you were using in your earlier version of Windows were not updated properly.
  • The Add Printer Wizard did not successfully return control to Setup. This problem is known to occur with the OEM version of Windows 95 provided by Compaq, and may occur with other OEM versions of Windows 95 as well.



RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95, and later versions of this file:

   MSPRINT.DLL  version 4.00.951  dated 9/11/95  55,920 bytes 







STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.

This issue is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.
