PUB3: ScanDisk/Disk Defragmenter May Damage Publisher 95 Disks
Q140843
-------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0 -------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== If you run ScanDisk (Scandisk.exe) or Disk Defragmenter (Defrag.exe) or other MS-DOS utilities on Publisher 3.0 Disk 2 or higher from an MS-DOS window in Windows 95, you may damage your disks. After you run these utilities, you may not be able to use these disks to install Publisher. CAUSE ===== Publisher Disk 2 and higher are distributed on a special format of disk called DMF (distribution media format). A DMF disk can store 1.68 megabytes (MBs) of information on a 3.5-inch disk (the standard 3.5-inch disk can only store 1.44 megabytes of information). Publisher Disk 1 is a standard 1.44 MB disk. If you open an MS-DOS window in Windows 95 and run an MS-DOS utility on one of the DMF disks, you may corrupt the disk. RESOLUTION ========== It is not a good idea to run this type of MS-DOS utility on your original Publisher disks. If you must run ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter on a Publisher disk, do not do so from an MS-DOS window. You can access these utilities directly from the Start menu. STATUS ====== Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Publisher version 3.0 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
