This article was previously published under Q140562

SYMPTOMS

If you try to open a publication created in Microsoft Publisher 1.0 or 2.0 in Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95 or Publisher 97 and you are running Windows NT Workstation 3.51, you may receive the following error message:

Publisher cannot open this file.

CAUSE

This will happen if your TEMP environment variable is either undefined or set to a folder that is damaged or missing.

RESOLUTION

To check or change the TEMP environment variable, do the following:

  1. Run Control Panel and double-click the System icon.
  2. Look at the User Environment Variables list at the bottom of the System dialog box. Check to see if there is a line similar to:

          temp=c:\temp

    If there is no temp= line, type the following in the Variable text box:

    temp

    Type the name of a folder (including a path) in the Value box. Click Set.

  3. Create a folder with the correct name.

STATUS
